Search Engine Optimization as part of your Internet Marketing Plan

Does it really matter for which search engine you optimize as part of your Internet Marketing Plan?

Search engines; the gateways to the new frontier.  Search engines allow the small business to play with the big business.  They allow the Mom and Pop shop to have a voice and not be squashed by the marketing power of their much larger competitors.

There are huge advantages to the search engines.  And with Google, Yahoo and Bing being the top tools available, the question is:

“Should I optimize for Google, Bing, yahoo, Ask, Yp, etc?”

It’s a great question and before we answer that question, lets take a quick look at how much of the market share each of these tools has here in the United States.

According to an article by Mashable in April 2011, Google maintains 64% of the market share, Bing & Yahoo combined have 30% (bing powers the Yahoo search engine so it makes sense to lump the two of them together) and everyone else in the world (ask.com, aol.com, ehow.com, etc.) are all scrounging for the remaining 5% of traffic in the US.

Google Bing Yahoo stats 4 11 11 Search Engines as Part of Your Internet Marketing Plan

Percent of the Market share: Google 64.42% (Blue), Yahoo, 15.69% (green), Bing 14.32% (Red), Other 5.57% (Purple)

As you read some of the comments on the article mentioned above, you’ll also see that several people claim that Google drives 80%+.  Not surprisingly, in our own stats and in looking at our own analytics, we see that Google drives about 89-90% of the traffic and bing/yahoo drive about 9-10% (the rest of the traffic is from other referring websites).

In addition to the stats, I periodically interview different clients of ours on the particular search engine they use.  And the common response is, “Google”!

We do have a few clients that will use Bing.  They tell me that it is primarily because it was the default search engine on their computer and they don’t know how to change it.  They continue on to say that if they really need something, they go to Google.

So, now that we have some sort of a foundation from which to work, it makes many of our optimization decisions a little easier.

Predominately, for our clients, we use Google.  That is the primary tool used by our clients customers and for that reason, we mainly optimize for Google.

(And, by the way, we’ve seen that Google has recently shifted their approach – again – and for that reason, our strategy on Google has shifted slightly to be more in-line with their algorithms).

However, with that being the case, we do realize that some segments of the market do appeal more to Bing versus Google.  Typically, the technology driven markets lean toward Bing.  For this reason, we would encourage that client to optimize Bing over Google.

Internet Marketing Vs. Traditional Marketing

by Jeff Hensiek on April 27, 2012

Stop Traditional Marketing and Work with an Internet Marketing Company

Is Traditional Marketing Dead?  Has Internet Marketing Won?

I was talking to a well established business the other day and they asked me, “Why should I do any sort of internet marketing?”

They went on to explain their rationale.  “We’ve been in the market for 30 years and we have been sending post cards and advertising in the news paper for a long time.”

At the root level, I can empathize with this business owner.  However, from a marketing level, I need to help address the real issue.

Here’s a Fact for us to chew on:  A New York Times article from 2007 claims that the average American will see up to 5000 marketing messages per day.  This number has more than doubled from 1977 where the average America saw roughly 2000 marketing messages per day.

So, what does this mean for the average business that has been advertising for the past 30 years?  Have their advertising dollars simply gone to waist?

No, The advertising dollars have been well spent, however, what I will tell you, is that today’s consumer is being bombarded so frequently by a ton of different marketing messages that we’ve learned to filter all of the ads down to only the ads that are most relevant to us.

stop sign with car 300x196 Internet Marketing Vs. Traditional MarketingThink of it this way, when you were driving home last night, do you recall the other 5 types of cars you met at the stop sign?

Unless you are actively looking for a new vehicle you probably won’t remember.

Does this mean that you weren’t paying attention?  No, you were paying attention, you made it home safely, you stopped at the stop sign and you followed the “rules of the road”.

However, the make and model of the car next to you didn’t stand out.

Now, if you were actively looking for a red Nissan, you’ll spot almost every Nissan that is out there.  In fact, you’ll suddenly see that there are a flood of ads trying to get you to buy a certain type of vehicle.

This is because you are actively in the market and looking for a vehicle.

That draws us a nice parallel to internet marketing and the importance of having an internet marketing plan.  The search engines are focused on providing us results based on what we are looking for.  You need to type in a particular search term and you’ll find relevant search results based on your query.

This is the magic of internet marketing…you are targeting people who are actively looking for your product/service.   No longer are you wasting marketing dollars on people who aren’t interested in your product/service, you are actively targeting people searching for you and what you provide.

For a complementary SEO Analysis of your website, please find a reputable Internet Marketing Firm.  Most companies will do this as a courtesy because they are looking to gain your business.
